I Love Rock n’ Roll (but no one put a dime in the jukebox…)

Woke up this morning at 3:51AM to a shaking room. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night to small tremors, but this one was a little different. About 2.8 seconds after I opened my eyes, I saw my mom racing down our hallway opening all the doors along the way.

I later remembered that my mom had told me whenever there is an earthquake we should open the front door. If the building were to shift we’d get stuck inside the apartment. When that happens (as it did last year with hundreds of families) rescuers will take an ax to your door. Our door’s made of iron, so I’m pretty sure that’s not gonna work to well with us…

The whole ordeal lasted maybe thirty seconds. I honestly have no idea how long exactly because I was half asleep and trying not to burst out laughing. The whole scene was just too surreal standing in the dining room in my pajamas in the middle of the night with the pictures swinging on the walls. Eventually it did stop though and I did what any other average person would do in my position; I went back to bed. I must admit it was a little harder to fall asleep this time because every time I would start to drift off a little shake would wake me back up.

I’ve lost count of the number of little tremors I felt today. They feel like nothing in comparison. I decided to check out the news and see if it was a big deal or not. What I discovered was that it was 5.9 on the Richter scale at the epicenter which was 10 miles north of Viña. And the Chilean opinion? A strong tremor, but not an earthquake. Now that I have something to compare it to, I’ll try to be a better judge of the scale of the tremors and earthquakes that come my way.

**Update** Watching the news tonight and the reporter said we had twenty-three quakes today, 23! First thought in my mind: Can I get earthquake insurance for my Mac?
